The Creature of the Month - Spring Heel Jack by Dr. Bob Curran

London during the early and mid-19th century was a ghostly place. In places such as Cripplegate, Southwark and Hammersmith it was not unusual to see human-like figures appear and disappear, leap over walls and even houses or appear in doorways to grasp at passers-by. Others simply appeared in front of startled travellers, often assuming a menacing position but jumping away if approached. Some, however, did attack certain individuals although usually not fatally. The accounts of such encounters are therefore many and varied. In other towns too, such as Sheffield, people were wakened from sleep to find strange spectral figures standing over them only to bound away through open windows as soon as they stirred. Some even speak of such “phantoms” leaping over buildings which were over ten feet high, in such flight. One of the most famous of these creatures was Spring Heel Jack.

The first accounts of this fantastic creature appeared around 1830 as snippets of newspaper articles. In general, they conformed to the general type of “London ghosts” with the exception that Jack had an almost Devil-like appearance and that he could jump fantastic heights. At first, he was simply described as a “man-like” figure but around 1837, descriptions of him began to become clearer and more specific. It was stated for instance, that he wore a dark cloak and long black leggings ending in bulky, heavy-looking boots. Beneath this cloak he wore what appeared to be some tight-fitting costume made out of what seemed to be a black oilskin-like material. Some descriptions have the bring sprouting enormous bat-like wings which enabled him to fly over the rooftops. His “fingers” were also made of a hard iron-like metal which could inflict a nasty scratch. Many accounts speak of his eyes which were red and glowing like balls of fire. With these the being terrorised and sometimes transfixed his victims before either assaulting them or springing away.

Jack first struck on a night in September 1837 when he attacked three women making their way home in the dark. During the attack, he tore the blouse of one Polly Adams, scratching her stomach with his metallic claws as he did so. The women described him as being extremely tall – taller than an average human – with burning eyes and with fire coming out of his nostrils. He appeared to be extremely strong and forced a couple of them back against a wall at once. The next month, he assaulted a second woman, Mary Stevens at Lavender Hill. A serving maid, she had been on her way to visit her parents in Battersea when the attack happened. Mary described his touch as being cold and clammy “like that of a corpse”, something she had experienced at first hand as the entity was trying to kiss and grope her before bounding away. That same month, a gentleman on his way home and passing Barnes Cemetery, saw a cloaked figure leaping over the railing with a single bound. It disappeared into the cemetery, leaving the gentleman wondering.  The very next day, the same figure leapt in front of a passing carriage, causing it to crash and the coachman to severely injure himself.

Throughout November and December of 1837, Spring Heel Jack made frequent attacks on groups of girls going about London usually after dark. Most of his victims were serving maids and washerwomen who were of the “lower orders” – the being did not put in an appearance to high-born ladies. Nevertheless, there was an outcry and numerous articles started to appear in the London press on the matter. By the beginning of 1838, few servant girls would venture out after dark for fear of encountering the Thing.

On 9th January 1838, the Mayor of London, Sir John Cowan revealed at a public meeting that he had received a letter from “a resident of Peckham” which declared that Spring Heel Jack was nothing more than a trick put together because of a wager. A certain high-ranking individual, said the letter, had laid a bet with a “daring but foolhardy companion” that he <his companion> would not appear to the populace of a number of villages around London in three different disguises – a ghost, a bear and a devil. The villain had appeared in several of these guises to several young women, depriving them of their senses. He had even appeared at the doors of several grand houses, causing the servant girl who answered his ringing in each case, to swoon away. The Mayor therefore declared this so-called “Spring Heel Jack” <as the Thing was coming to be known> a public menace and nuisance.

Although the Mayor seemed sceptical, others remained convinced that the apparition had supernatural origins. Servant girls about Hammersmith, Ealing and Kensington and even further afield told diabolic tales of this “ghost”.  Throughout 1838, a pile of letter flooded into the Mansion House <the Lord Mayor’s official residence> complaining about the “wicked pranks” of the miscreant and about the numbers of ladies throughout the City who were “reduced to a state of nervousness” by his antics. And although it was said that Spring Heel Jack was no more than a sexual prevent, stories such as that of a respectable doctor who had answered the screams of a young girl who was being attacked by the fiend and had then seen him leap away over a nine foot wall <which no human could possibly do> only added to supernatural speculation.

On 20th February 1838, there was an incident at the gate of a house on the edge of London. A strange figure standing by the gatepost was heard to shout “Bring a light! We have caught Spring Heel Jack!” In response, eighteen year-old Jane Alsop ran outside with a candle to investigate. She was confronted at the gate by the figure who had called and whom she described as a “tall man dressed in a black cloak”. The figure simply spat fire at her – blue and white flames – and made a grab for her dress with metallic-looking claws. Jane’s sister appeared and dragged her back into the house. Strangely enough the attacker followed them and rapped on the front door several times before disappearing. In the turmoil, Jane’s sister claimed that he had dropped his cloak by the gate but that this was gone when they returned later. The Alsop case was later reported in The Times and caused a sensation all across London.

Eight days after the Alsop case, on 28th February, eighteen year-old Lucy Scales was returning with her sister from visiting her brother who was a butcher in Limehouse.  As they passed through Green Dragon Alley, a little way from their brother’s house, they encountered an individual standing at angles to the line of the alley. It looked like a man in a heavy cloak. Lucy who was a little way ahead made to pass him whereupon he threw wide the cloak and spurted fire at her, temporarily blinding her. She fell to the ground and her sister rushed forward but the assailant bounded away, taking giant leaps. Lucy’s brother, hearing the screams, also ran out but was unable to stop the fleeing figure. After this occurrence, gangs of vigilantes were formed to search for the eerie bring but Spring Heel Jack eluded them all.

By now stories of the being were appearing everywhere in London and in other towns and cities from Brighton to Liverpool. However shortly after the Alsop case a certain Thomas Millbank was arrested after boasting in the public house that he was Spring Heel Jack. The arresting officer was James Lea who had been involved in the celebrated Red Barn Murder in 1827. Millbank was brought to trial but the case against him collapsed when Jane Alsop was adamant that her assailant had breathed fire and Millbank said that he could do no such thing.

For a while Spring Heel Jack appears to have vanished and there were no further sighting around London. Nevertheless, he did reappear in November 1872 where he turned up in Peckham as “the Peckham Ghost” which newspapers identified as being Spring Heel Jack. He was identified as “an aristocratic figure” that leapt over high walls in order to escape capture. Newspapers such as The News of the World claimed that this figure had Peckham in a state of terror. Shortly after, early in 1873, he seemed to have appeared in Sheffield where he was known as “the Park Ghost” and was observed leaping over fences in local woodland parks. In 1877 he appeared at the Aldershot Barracks and slapped a soldier on guard duty, bounding away despite several shots being fired at him. In the latter half of the 19th century he also appeared in Lincolnshire and Liverpool. The last recorded sighting of him was on the Welsh Borders in 1986 when he leapt across the road in front of a travelling salesman’s car. The salesman said that he was wearing what looked like a black rubber ski-suit type garment.

So who or what was Spring Heel Jack?

Many commentators, even at the time, thought that it was some sort of trick. Popular opinion fell on an Irish noble Henry de La Poer Beresford, 3rd Marquis of Waterford <1811-1859> known as “the Mad Marquis”. He was known to do anything for a bet including daubing the High Street of Melton Mowbray with red paint after a fox hunt <the origin of the phrase “painting the town red”>. In 1842, however, he married and settled down to an exemplary life until his death in a hunting accident in 1859. The connection with Spring Heel Jack however was very strong and he may have been the aristocratic figure referred to in the letter to the Lord Mayor of London.

Or was the being merely some sort of bogeyman stirred up in the popular mind? The mid to late 19th century was a time when the working classes of England were finding their own identity and were beginning to look on the upper classes with suspicion. This emerging class struggle can be seen in some of the “monster figures” of the time – Dracula, Jack the Ripper etc. Was Spring Heel Jack just another personification of this in the working mind – it is interesting that he’s always described in aristocratic terms and always preyed on the “lower classes”. Whatever he was the idea of the bounding, dark-caped figure, breathing fire, perhaps still lurks somewhere deep within the English mind.

The Gaean Conspiracy by Anodea Judith, CAW

Given that it's Earth Day we thought it was a good time to share some thoughts on our Mother Earth.  Who better to lend their thoughts than Anodea Judith?  This article is part of Part 5 entitled Nature, Evolution & Ecospirituality.  Enjoy!

This excerpt comes from Green Egg Omelette: An Anthology of Art and Articles from the Legendary Pagan Journal from Oberon Zell-Ravenheart.

Conspire: (from spiritus, or spirit) to concur or work to one end; act in harmony; cooperate; to plot together; breathe together.

Gaea: Earth Mother Goddess of pre-classical Greece, creator of the Heavens.

Gaean Conspiracy: a movement to connect the subsystems of Gaea into harmonious cooperation through mutual recognition of their identity as part of an evolving planetary deity.

WE ARE ALL PART OF THE GAEAn Conspiracy. Based on the scientific and theological premise that the Earth is an enormous multi-systemic living creaturea planetary deity we call Gaea—the Gaean Conspiracy is a movement to reconnect our social, economic, scientific, religious and political systems into harmonious co-creation with the larger, long standing bio-geological Gaean system. It is a recognition of the evolutionary process that must take place as our planetary being awakens to a more integrated, self-reflexive state of global consciousness. The coordination of this planetary harmony is the next evolutionary step that we face as a species and as a planet.

The Gaean Conspiracy is based on the following major premises:

A scientific principle with religious overtones, this thesis states what ancient Pagans knew instinctively: that the Earth and all life upon it are an interpenetrating system of divine proportion. Earth’s ability to resist entropy and to regulate temperature, oxygen, ocean salinity and other qualities necessary for life indicates that She is a biological superorganism having consciousness. This dynamic homeostasis (self-regulation) of living organisms and their environment is the interface that human beings are currently threatening.

In 1971, an article by Otter Zell entitled “TheaGenesis: The Birth of the Goddess” contained the first published descriptions of the Earth as a living Goddess. Otter’s vision was based on the fact that all life in the biosphere began with a single organism, which has divided infinitely to form the incredible diversity of life that has evolved thus far. Much as a fertilized ovum divides again and again to make up the many organs of a human body, all life in the biosphere is part of a single living organism, of which we and the plants and animals are like cells and perhaps, collectively, organs.

The Gaia Hypothesis has been popularized by James Lovelock, an atomospheric scientist. Through his observation of atmospheric fluctuations, Lovelock discovered that the atmosphere of Gaea maintains a consistent composition, defying the behavior of reactive gases. Such a homeostatic balance of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide is an anomaly in our solar system. Oxygen, highly reactive, should combine with the reducing gas of methane or react with the 78% nitrogen and fall to the ground. Instead, oxygen
remains at a constant 21%. In addition, despite a 25% warming of the sun over geological time, there are homeostatic balances of world temperature and of the constant salinity of the ocean, which logically, should get saltier as it evaporates. In the words of Lovelock, “It must take a lot of work to keep up such a wild disequilibrium.”

And who is doing the work? It is our biosphere, that arose over 3.5 billion years ago: the microbes and the plants and animals which interact with the seemingly solid organ of Gaea’s crust. Thin as a spider’s web, this delicate miracle of life is the chemical and climatic thermostat of the Goddess.

But Gaea is not the biosphere alone. Just as a living redwood tree is 97% inanimate matter, just as a snail includes its shell, so Gaea is a total organism, comprising Her crust, Her flowing mantle and Her radioactive metallic core. Her changing biosphere is a thin layer of expression on Her beautiful face—the visage of the One of Whom we are a part and upon Whom we depend to survive.

Gaea is not only alive, She is conscious.
An organism that is alive changes. As a thing changes it either moves towards entropy, increasing disorder, or towards organization and greater complexity. We see in every untouched wilderness that Gaea keeps Her house beautiful and balanced. We know by the proliferation of species and the perfection of untampered ecosystems that Gaea resists entropy.

The ability to resist the natural entropy of open systems implies the influence of consciousness or intelligence. Gaea’s ability to sustain the wild disequilibrium of which Lovelock speaks is indicative of a feedback process that elicits a self-correcting response. She is able to sense and to change accordingly to maintain the exact conditions needed for life—operative intelligence at work.

While Lovelock was strongly criticized for implying that Gaea’s intelligence had purpose, by definition a thing that is moving toward greater organization is evolving. Since She is alive and evolving, we watch for the pattern and ask the questions, “What is She evolving into?” and “How can we help?”

The basic evolutionary pattern in biological organisms is movement toward greater consciousness. Since the animals with the largest brains are the most recent additions, this progression is called cephalization. Simple homeostasis does not require a great deal of consciousness—our bodies maintain their inner temperature and chemical balance with little if any attention from our conscious mind. But as circumstances require greater effort to maintain balance, greater consciousness is also required: when it gets really cold, we put a coat on or make a fire.

Teilhard de Chardin, apocalyptic theologian, spoke of the Earth growing a new organ of consciousness which he called the noosphere. The noosphere is made up of creatures who are capable of sharing and spreading consciousness. It can be thought of as Gaea’s cerebral cortex. Humans and animals may be the neurons of Gaea, growing neural networks via our wondrous communications systems, which are  themselves only seconds old. This means Her consciousness is growing very rapidly.

What does a being do as it becomes conscious? Many spiritual systems, especially the older ones, have risen from the very fabric of this world. Gaea’s evolutionary thrust is reflected in the spiritual goals of self-realization.

To realize one’s self means to awaken to whom you are in your entirety, to harmoniously integrate your inner parts. Based on models of modern psychology, systems thinking and spiritual enlightenment, the next stage of planetary evolution will involve a reclamation of lost and severed parts; a reintegration and increased functionality of interdependent systems; and a continual self-examination and self-correction aiming toward complete identity as part of a planetary being.

Realization on a planetary scale means that a critical mass of the conscious aspects of Gaea realize the absolute importance of all the other Gaean components and unite with them. To come to understand that there is no “other,” only a very large self that is highly diversified within, is a global process of epic proportions which will extend far beyond our lifetimes.

Put simply, this means:
Gaea is trying to wake up!

The noosphere is all sentient creatures as well as the interconnecting nerve fibers of the media and telecommunications networks. Even animals are part of this network: as we watch movies and documentaries about them, we bring them into our consciousness. In the same way that the occipital nerve of our central nervous system influences our consciousness by bringing visual information to the brain, the international communications medium is a neural network that affects our global consciousness.

While we sleep, we are unaware of external visual input and instead dwell in the archetypal realm. The process of awakening from sleep is reflected in an increasing ability to connect quickly and directly with what is going on around us.

So, too, is the planet awakening through the development of the noosphere. Once upon a time, war could rage in Europe without anyone in America having any knowledge of it. Then the noosphere grew and we could know, but with a time lag, a buffering separation between the reality of the war and our consciousness of it. Now the planetary nervous system is awakening ever more and information about significant events reaches a much larger body of consciousness more quickly. The experience is also a fuller one of sight and sound together. The noosphere is evolving, its body of consciousness self-organizing into an elaborate neural network.

When an injured person falls into unconsiousness, they cease to be aware of their wounds. As they come to, they first become aware of sensations and sounds. Then they open their eyes to their surroundings and next
try to sit up, only to find their body racked with pain. Working toward awareness of the situation as a whole, they attempt to connect the sensory information impacting their groggy consciousness; they begin to remember who they are, where they are, and what happened.

Gaea is awakening now, as Her various members realize that they are part of a larger divine system. She got a look at Her face in the mirror when the pictures of Earth from space were broadcast into the minds of Her children. When all the parts of Gaea recognize each other as participants in parallel growth heading for an Omega point of coalescence and integrative harmony, then the global consciousness of this planet will have awakened to a realization of identity as a global being.

We who are aware of this process are privileged to have a ringside seat. We are Her eyes and ears, Her voice and hands. Human beings, with our instruments of science and global communication, are in a unique position to understand the direction of this change and help it or thwart it—at our own liberation or peril. Asking and perhaps discovering in what direction Her evolutionary thrust is moving, in answering, we become partners in it.

Teilhard de Chardin observed: “Man is not the center of the universe, as once we thought in our simplicity, but something much more wonderful—that arrow pointing the way to the final unification of the world in terms of life.”1

But in our rush towards planetary realization, we are creating a paralysis of greedlock.2  Since everything on this planet is part of Gaea, what in the world is She doing to Herself? Is destruction of our own habitat part
of Her plan? Is She trying to get rid of us as a failed experiment? Or are we hurrying Her own awakening? If we are She, and we are also destroying the most living aspect of Her, does that mean She is engaged in self-destruction? If so, why?

Gaea is reacting to a deep psychic wound.

I return again to human beings as a model People come to me in my healing practice to deal with self-destructive activities that they are unable to stop: drinking, eating, scratching themselves raw, ruining their relationships, hurting their children. They don’t want to be doing these things and they aren’t fully conscious of why they do. Our culture is full of this kind of addictive self-destruction.

In every case, the behavior was the result of one wound or several that had been glossed over, forgotten, discounted or distorted. An unhealed wound of any magnitude is an event that thwarts the evolutionary progress of the afflicted. Until the wound is healed. the organism cannot go on to become what it is
meant to be.

Human addictive destruction of the biosphere can he understood as a systemic reaction on the part of Gaea to escape from a wound. It is a sign of something having gone awry, a self-sabotage reflex, a circuit breaker. If this is so, then what is the wound?

The wound that Gaea sustained is the wound of Her children turning away from Her. If her children were to be the arrow pointing the way to unification, then we are surely missing the mark. Instead of unity, our separation from Nature has resulted in a fragmentation of Her energy. Culture is severed from planet, much as mind is “severed” from body, the ongoing condition from wounds suffered. As a result, we are living with a biospheric amnesia and Gaea is living in a state of partial dissociation. The noosphere has become what Theodore Roszak calls the neurosisphere.

The imposition of patriarchal dominator values, which destroyed the religions and cultural models that revered the Earth, was the original infliction of this wound. It has been a 6,000 year process of separation of human beings from Nature (long to us, but moments to Gaea). In this time we have moved away
from biological models for our cultural structure, replacing them with mechanistic ones. Powerful, but out of step with Gaea, they take us away from Her and from ourselves as biological beings.

But in reality this separation is not actually possible—we are utterly dependent upon Gaea. Our separation is an illusion that unfortunately has us firmly in its grip. Joanna Macy points out:

“Trying to escape from something that we are dependent on breeds a love-hate relationship with it. This love-hate relationship with matter permeates our culture and inflames a twofold desire—to destroy and to possess. These two impulses, craving and aversion, inflame each other in a kind of vicious circle.”3

So our culture compulsively seeks to possess and destroy the very deity that gives us life.

We are each part of Gaea. Her wound is our own wound. As we are separated from Mother Nature, we are simultaneously separated from our own nature. Our self-destruction is her destruction. As the face of our planet breaks out in biospheric acne, our social systems break down, our economic systems
decline, our political systems wage war and our immune systems fail. Our despair is Her despair. Her pain is our doom.

But as we are a microcosmic reflection of Her, so is our vision and our hope. Herein lies the good news.

What can we do?

Get rid of the illusion of separateness between yourself and other parts of the planet- “us-and-them” thinking. Look to heal the wounds within yourself and others—even your enemies are part of Gaea. Connect again with Nature, walk in the wilderness, immerse your consciousness in places where She is
still whole and healthy. Help others to recognize the vision of global consciousness. Promote awareness of the Earth as awareness of our very selves and of our purpose in this amazing cosmic creation story.

Conduct rituals that strengthen the connection of human and Gaean consciousness. Recycle. Pray. Give money to environmental organizations. Write letters to your newspaper. Learn to love each other and appreciate the beauty and diversity She has created. Help to bring about the critical mass that can carry
us on to global awakening. Wake up!

Ben Franklin once said that his greatest invention was the word “American” to describe the melting pot of cultures that were forming this country. It erased the differences emphasized by such labels as “Dutch,” “Italian,” “Virginian,” “New Yorker,” “Catholic,” or “Protestant.” Otter Zell has suggested we begin to think of ourselves as “Gaeans,” a word that further transcends our races, religions, or nationalities. As Gaeans we can join together in this global conspiracy to awaken our Mother.

Humanity stands poised on the brink of a quantum leap in evolution. The effects of a global change in consciousness are truly cosmic, shrinking by comparison the fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of the Cold War, and the advent of computers. We have an enormous opportunity if we can recognize it before we
destroy our chance.

The Gaean Conspiracy is based on the belief that planetary awakening will occur through the mutual recognition and coordination of all our major systems: from individuals and families to cities and continents; from politics and economics to religion and science. As Al Gore stated at the Democratic
Convention, “The environment must be the central organizing principle for civilization.”

As we balance our mechanistic models by integrating them with spiritual and biological models, we make the first steps in this transformation. This process extends beyond our lifetime. For this reason, it is difficult for us to conceive and implement it. But if homosapiens is indeed the animal privileged to point the arrow, let us reflect deeply upon its direction.

After the Nazca lines, animal mounds that are 5000 years old! by Philip Coppens

In September 2011, the British journal “Antiquity” reported that Google Earth had revealed gigantic 5000-year-old mounds in Peru that were shaped like animals, but it took several more months, until late March 2012, before the mainstream media reported on these discoveries.

Google Earth is becoming more and more a favorite tool for archaeological discoveries and has resulted in uncovering lost cities in the Amazon, while it continues to be a favorite tool to identify enigmatic structures in the Gobi Desert since they were announced in November 2011.

Massive geoglyphs in the shape of animals is nothing new to Peru: dozens of them are depicted on the enigmatic Nazca lines, made famous by Erich von Däniken when he argued that these geoglyphs should be seen from the skies. At the time, hardly any research had been done in these strange geoglyphs, but since, archaeologists have identified they form part of a larger complex, which even includes pyramids.

But Google Earth enabled the discovery of even larger depictions, mounds in the shapes of birds like the duck and the giant condor, a puma and even sea animals like an orca. As with the Nazca lines, these objects are best to be seen for the sky, in evidence that they were only discovered through Google Earth.

The duck mound was created by adding a head to a natural formation, while a nearby circular mound is thought to represent an egg. Most remarkable is that some of the mounds have been dated to be as old as 5000 years old – 3000 BC, making them on par with the pyramids of Caral in Northern Peru, dated to ca. 3200 BC. Whereas until recently, archaeologists were reluctant to date anything in the country BC, all of a sudden 3000 years are added to Peruvian history.

The man responsible for discovering and dating the mounds is University of Missouri anthropology professor emeritus Robert Benfer. “I had always noted that a very large structure just north of Lima resembled a bird. But since there were supposedly no giant animal effigy mounds in South America, I thought it couldn’t be one,” Dr. Benfer said. Or how suppositions were once again proven to be wrong!

The mounds range from 15 feet to 1300 feet long, spread out over six valleys in coastal Peru, in fact, less than two miles from the sea. The puma mound was found in El Paraiso, in the Chilca Valley. ‘The finding of animal effigy mounds where there were none before changes our conception of early Peruvian prehistory,’ Benfer said. ‘That they probably represent the Andean zodiac is also a new find. A controversial interpretation of some Nazca figures as representations of the zodiac is supported by these mounds.’ Benfer argues that a mound in the shape of a condor is aligned to the Milky Way when viewed from a nearby temple, while the puma mound aligned with the June solstice when viewed from the same temple. He notes that structures not only represented the stars, but were also aligned with them. The discovery therefore highlights once again that our ancestors were not only aware of astronomy, but used it in bringing down the skies down to earth, reminiscent of that hermetic saying “As Above, So Below”.

Unfortunately, Benfer immediately follows these important observations by going for the all too common explanations so cherished by archaeologists, claiming these designs would help the ancient Peruvians with farming and fishing!  “For example, knowing that December 21 had passed was very important. If there was no sign of an El Niño by then, fishers would know they would have another good year, and farmers would face neither drought nor floods,” Benfer said. It is clear that a farmer did not need such a complex system to know the solstices and like. Far simpler designs could be created for that. And the true reason as to why these structures were built therefore will remain once again to be discovered.

Benfers’ work will not come as a surprise to Fernando and Edgar Elorrieta Salazar. In 2003, these brothers identified various animal forms in the hills and designs in and around Machu Picchu. They discovered that the design of the capital Cuczo was equally ingeniously created to form the image of a puma, the “royal animal”. Many of these constructions were achieved by using a mixture of natural shapes, which were then augmented – “stressed” – by human intervention, often by creating fields in very specific shapes. Creating fields is easier than building huge mounds, but Machu Picchu and Cuzco are located at high altitude, whereas the mounds are located near the coast.

Most important, however, is the realization that Peru’s history continues to become more complex and older with almost every new discovery made. If you want to explore the area yourself, you can do so by taking in this information.
