For over 45 years, Erich von Däniken has pursued the theory which postulates that Earth might have been visited by extraterrestrials in the remote past. Below he shares his thoughts on how his theories have progressed over the years.
NEW PAGE BOOKS: How have your ideas/views changed since you wrote Chariots of the Gods?
Erich von Däniken: Chariots was a provocative book with 224 question marks. 43 years have passed since it was published, and in the meantime I have presented an incredible amount of clear indications that our planet was definitely visited by extraterrestrials in the past. I even know the names of some of these ET’s. I have absolutely no more doubts concerning these visitors from another world.

NEW PAGE BOOKS: How do you feel that the new Ancient Aliens series on the History Channel is doing in conveying your message?
Erich von Däniken: I am absolutely happy with it, although I have not much to do with today’s UFOs. It’s time that our society discusses more and more the possibility that humans are not the only intelligent form of life in the universe. And this is exactly what Ancient Aliens discusses. Everyone knows the SETI project in astronomy. SETI stands for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. We should also start a SETA project, a Search for Extraterrestrial Artefacts. There are artefacts on earth, probably even in...orbit around the globe, on the moon, or on Mars. Ancient Aliens is very helpful in developing such projects.
NEW PAGE BOOKS: What makes Twilight of the Gods different from the books you've written previously?
Erich von Däniken: The main theme in Twilight is the return of the gods as it pertains to the ruins of Puma-Punku, in the highland of Bolivia. I prove without any doubt that Puma-Punku was never built by stone-age people. And concerning the return of the gods, I’m not only explaining the complicated Mayan calendar, but I compare the expectation of the return with...that of other ancient cultures. Erich von Däniken: When was the beginning of the universe? What do you call god?
Erich von Däniken is arguably the most widely read and most-copied nonfiction author in the world. He published his first (and most well-known) book, Chariots of the Gods, in 1968. It was a worldwide best-seller and has been followed by 31 more books including the recent hit History Is Wrong. His works have been translated into 28 different languages and have sold a total of 63 million copies. Several of his books have also been turned into films, and Erich’s ideas have been the inspiration for a wide range of TV series, including the History Channel’s smash hit special, “Ancient Astronauts.” He is an ever-present figure on the international lecture circuit.
